Performing arts residencies

Offering performance artists a residency for rest is as valuable as offering space for work. We recognize that rest can be the basis for quality art. Hyperbolic production has been normalized. Exhaustion is currency. We want to contradict this by making it possible to give lodging to emptiness. We want to give artists time and space to restore themselves, a regenerative period. We see artist's ceaseless cultivation of answers that bring dynamism, complexity, and enrichment to reality. Inspiration to create may emerge; it is not a condition of the residency.

 is a collective, rustic, and
In the so-called 'dry season' of November-May, the air usually feels a little dryer and therefore cooler than in the green season. After the first rains in June, you can witness the fluorescence of nature to lush surroundings.

Many people prefer the green season that is typically sunny with cooling showers every few evenings or days. It's a good season to visit Zipolite for a week or more to experience the variation.

Nudity

Nudity is common on the beach, anywhere in CAMP, and only requested of adults in the pool and sauna. If your cycle or gender expression might mean keeping your bottoms on, please do whatever suits your needs. When nude, sit on your towel please.

Differentiating nudity and sexuality

An absence of sexual pressure is fundamental to the clothing optional experience.
Besides being personally liberating, experiencing social nudity is humanising and equalising. Without clothing's adjectives, people tend to accept one another as the special, sometimes fragile being each truly is. Mutual vulnerability promotes mutual respect, honesty, and trust. Civilised behaviour and open communications seem only natural within such a disarming context.

• Coercion, harassment, and predation in any form is prohibited by guest agreements so that no one is likely to witness a discomforting situation.

There is no arrival desk. To enter CAMP, do not ring the deliveries-only doorbell, instead operate the entrance with the code sent to you. Use this

of CAMP to locate your quarters or bed. Bedding is provided, though you will need to make your bed upon arrival. Your accommodations will be ready at or before 14:00 (2:00pm) on the day your stay begins (you may arrive earlier and store your things by the lockers).

Dormitory beds have assigned lockers. In your reservation message, you'll receive your locker's

and combination. While your belongings are quite safe in quarters or in lockers, CAMP is not responsible for your items.

Unlabeled
food is an 'eat me' invitation. Before departing, please unlabel any leftover food to share.

Respect those around you. Use earbuds for phone and laptop calls. Soft hours are 23:00-07:00 (11:00pm-7:00am). CAMP is perfume-free: refrain from using perfume, cologne, scented candles, synthetic incense. Overnight pets are prohibited.

Any faucet's water is safe to drink; our well's water is tested and potable. Showers and faucets are water-saving. Waste-water is processed and repurposed for irrigation (so only use our supplied bio-digestible shampoo & wash that is kind to the aerobic digesters).

To help with the challenge of shared sleeping spaces, an air conditioned and sound-tight private room for couples to use has comfy tatami mattresses and stocked with a supply of safe(r) sex items, and clean sheets. Please respect the space by keeping it tidy and sanitary. If you use sheets dispose of them in the laundry niche outside the room.  Limit use to 90 minutes and do not overnight in La Sala—yes, it is comfortable, but doing so prevents others from accessing it.

Zipolite
was isolated before an anarchic camper enclave began here in the 1970s.

When asked why we love Zipolite, we think of its allowing :  anyone is welcome here. The clothing-optional beach scene simply represents the town's values—an expression of the place, not a mass tourism attraction. Because of the relative isolation, social nudity, deadly rip currents, less developed infrastructure, and few indulgent luxuries; independent travellers favour Zipolite more than mass tourists.

We love the rustic sophistication; chickens on the road and beloved street dogs coexisting with the urbanity of hissing espresso machines and sublime baguettes. The vegetation, geology, the weather, and how nature changes, is paradisiacal.

 . The Zapotec language is still common in costeño Oaxaca. The etymology of Zipolite is uncertain. Of Nahuatl origin, Cipolite or Zipolite [sē·pō·lē·te] probably means 'where snails abound.'

1521 — Spanish conquest. Original civilizations in territories now making up the country of Mexico were interrupted by practices of genocide and colonization. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican civilizations more advanced than parallel European cultures flourished for nearly 5,000 years before the first contact with Europeans.

1821 — Mexican independence.

1955 — one family is believed to have occupied Zipolite. Rugged mountains to the north and rivers to the east and west had the local descendants of Original People largely isolated from the rest of Mexico. The surroundings remained underpopulated and uncensused for two more decades until coastal and inland roads were constructed. A persistent Zapotec culture had archeologists find some early C20 pottery identical to Preceramic period artefacts—carbon-dating was necessary to make distinctions.

to participate in a ritual and who taught him about the uses and effects of the mushroom, after Wasson lied to her about being worried about the whereabouts and wellbeing of his son, as the ritual was traditionally used to locate missing people and important items. Sabina let him take her picture on the condition that he keep it private, but Wasson nonetheless published the photo along with Sabina's name and the name of the community where she lived. Though he faced no consequences for his deceptions, and indeed, profited greatly from the knowledge he gained from her, Sabina was subsequently ostracised from her community as a result of his actions, and her house was burned down after she was briefly jailed, her son murdered, and she eventually died in poverty.  . Upon returning to their homes, those visitors talked about the unknown beach they had discovered. The following winter, a considerable number of travellers flocked to the beach, thereby giving birth to a 'hippie Eden.' Zipolite is not an isolated case in this sense, as other hippie hot spots emerged at approximately the same time in Goa (India), Ubud (Indonesia), and Pai (Thailand). Enchanted by the paradisiacal beauty and freedom from law enforcement—some stayed, and a small, socially permissive, clothing-optional, and custodial enclave of campers, ergo permanent residents, began.

1974 — national and foreign backpackers continued to pilgrim to budding 'hammock places' in Zipolite including Felipa, Lourdes, Pancho, and Arco de Noé (Shambhala). 

1976 — the coastal road was completed, better-connecting the region to the rest of Mexico. Electricity arrived to Zipolite.

1979 — Zipolite land, which almost a decade before had been corruptly deeded to private interests, was restored to ejido propiedad (communal property) and distributed to approximately three dozen local comuneros (coastal land in Oaxaca then, and now, may not be privately deeded).

1982 — previously a 5km walking path, a new car-navigable dirt road linked Zipolite to Puerto Ángel and the coastal road.  A Oaxaca-Pochutla inland highway was completed. The purple snail, an inhabitant of the Mexican Pacific (Zipolite means 'where snails abound'), was almost
